According to us they are all winners. During the summer months we enjoyed sitting at the corner bar at Paul’s Daughter at around 5pm, talking with tourists while the sun tickled our back. We call it our 5pm solar massage. While down the boardwalk at Ruby’s we found locals having a few pops while playing their favorite classic tunes on the jukebox.

Place to Beach really came into it’s own this year, creating a whole new nightlife scene in Coney Island. PTB had it’s own promoters and DJ’s, while serving a variety of drinks and Mexican fare.

Tom’s Coney Island opened their rooftop bar offering some of the best views of the beach and amusements.

There was something for everyone on the boardwalk this year.

Further toward Surf Ave. we had the opening of Margarita Island attempting to bring back the once vibrant Bowery. Carlo Muraco, who owned Beer Island and cult favorite “Shoot the Freak” debuted his new establishment this summer with it’s outside tiki bar and half priced frozen Margaritas.

With it’s newly opened museum and sideshows Coney Island USA’s Freak Bar is a delight for both locals and tourists alike. Meanwhile, across the street at W.12th we had the Russian flavored Shalyapin with it’s dimly lit back room karaoke. Next door to Shalyapin we have the Coney Island Bar and Grill hosting some of our favorite local bands.

Applebee’s with it’s happy hour drink specials certainly attracted a new crowd this past season. In front of MCU Park the newly refurbished Peggy O’Neill’s has created a museum like atmosphere with pictures of Coney Island’s past adorning the bar area.

To be fair we split this year’s nominees into two categories. Establishments that we consider Boardwalk Bars and Surf Ave. bars.

Vote for your favorite in each category. Voting will be held through New Year’s Day when most of these establishments will be open for business for the annual Polar Bear Plunge. Cheers!

We have winners! As of January 1, 2015 Ruby’s Bar and the Freak Bar have come in first place in their respective categories.

  1. Surf 12, the hottest new nightclub of Coney Island. Great grand opening to welcome all, in this multi-ethnic community, with entertainment, food and beverage in a friendly environment.
