Is Nathan’s Still King of Coney Island?
Who remembers when Nathan’s had the back room dining area where the restrooms are now located? That creaking screen door. The senior waiters. In the summer time, the back room was crowded, loud and full of flies!
We remember Johnny Po, the Chinese immigrant, holding court way back in the kitchen. It seems like his only job was to mix the homemade Nathan’s mustard. He was responsible for including just the right amount of spices. Filling up the communal mustard bowls in front of eagerly awaiting Surf Ave. customers.
Today, Nathan’s Famous is a corporation, long gone are the days of Johnny Po’s mustard along with the back room and it’s resident flies. Nathan’s has thrived without competition.
The summer of 2015 will be bringing burger franchise, Wahlburgers (click here to read) along with the famous Wahlberg clan and a popular TV show. All within a few feet of Nathan’s Famous.
Johnny Rocket’s may or may not being appearing, depending on if they can take out their garbage. A mini Checkers restaurant is appearing outside the subway terminal on Surf ave. off of Stillwell. It looks like IHOP (click here)will soon join the freshman class.
Will all of this affect Nathan’s?

I love Nathan’s.. I remember the dining room in the back and what a treat it felt like to eat there.. My Dad worked at Nathans from 1954 to 1993… I am a loyal, die-hard Nathan’s fan…. Everytime I visit New York.. I go to Coney Island Nathan’s… Who Remembers The Fireworks every Tuesday night in the summer. The Gold Old Days!!
