Proposal to Name Street after Original Nathan’s Owners

@TheConeyIslandBlog

It looks like it’s going to be a grand year for Nathan’s Famous! Not only are they celebrating their 100th year in existence, the street where original Nathan’s stands may soon be named after the original owners!

How does Nathan and Ida Handwerker Way sound? The proposal which was approved by Community Board 13 last night has one more step left. Next stop, city council.

The proposed sign will be located at the southwest of Surf ave. and Stillwell.

Nathan and Ida Handwerker of course were the husband and wife team behind opening the original Nathan’s a century ago in 1916.

Nathan spent a year working at Feltman’s Restaurant, where the very first hot dogs were served, to save $300 and open his own spot on Surf ave. With wife Ida’s hot dog recipe Nathan’s Famous went on to become an American icon.

It’s only fitting that the street in front of Nathan’s should be named after the Handwerkers.

Lloyd Handwerker, whose grandparents were Nathan and Ida, told us that this is very exciting for the Handwerker Family. He also told us it was his cousin Bill Handwerker, who is also Nathan’s grandson that recently pushed for the streetnaming honor.

If all goes as planned we may have a May 25th streetnaming ceremony to coincide with the opening of the beaches. One hundred years in the making.
