Will the New York Wheel Replace the Wonder Wheel? Vote Here For NYC’s Official Ferris Wheel.

@New York Wheel

While we are days away from the groundbreaking of Staten Island’s Observation Wheel New Yorkers are wondering if Staten Island’s new Ferris Wheel will replace the legendary Wonder Wheel of Coney Island? In the words of former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Brooklynites are assertively saying “fuhgeddaboudit!!”

According to The New York Wheel’s official website:

“The New York Wheel promises to become one of the City’s–and the world’s–great landmark attractions, alongside the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Located on the northeastern side of Staten Island (St. George), the 630-foot, or roughly 60-story, attraction will be the tallest observation wheel in the world and the only one in New York City.

The Wheel will accommodate up to 1,440 people per ride, welcoming as many as 30,000 visitors per day and an anticipated 4+ million visitors per year.

The New York Wheel will be open 7 days a week, approximately 350 days per year (accounting for severe weather days and maintenance) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m./12 a.m. in the fall, winter and spring, and staying open as late as 2 a.m. on special occasions.”

Coney Island has a storied history with the Ferris Wheel ever since George C. Tilyou left his honeymoon at the 1893 Columbian Exposition without the original prized Ferris Wheel, only to build one half it’s size at Coney Island. While claiming his was the largest!

In 1919 original Wonder Wheel owner Herman Garms formed the Wonder Wheel Corporation and made his army of workers shareholders in the corporation to avoid hiring union laborers. The Wonder Wheel has been operating since 1920.

Now that Staten Island will have it’s own wheel which one will reign supreme in NYC?

The legendary Coney Island Wonder Wheel or the sky-scraping New York Wheel of Staten Island?

It’s Brooklyn vs. Staten Island!

It’s Cyclones vs. Yankees!

Let the people decide!

    It is immaterial what new or larger Ferris wheel is being erected, The Wonder Wheel is sainthood, an established classic that can never be tarnished let alone replaced!
