Coney Island News Ticker

Critics’ Picks: Buster at the Carlyle

@The Coney Island Blog

We at the Coney Island Blog love our hometown entertainers. From the subterfuge of the sideshow performer or Bowery barker, to the circus of entertainment and wedding vows that will be strutting across the stage this Saturday at Coney Island USA.

However, when we think of New Yorkers. Like real New Yorkers, gleefully providing New York entertainment at it’s most swinging high-toned best.  There is only one name that comes to mind.

Buster Poindexter.

Staten Island born David Johansen gave birth to the cocktail loving swag lounge singer back in the 80’s, at a NYC club called Tramps. He had that one hit song called “Hot, Hot, Hot.” You know, the one that has been played at every wedding, bar mitzvah, sweet 16, retirement party and Irish wake since 1987.

Back in 2005, Coney Island USA crowned David Johansen as King Neptune for the 2005 Mermaid Parade. We saw him with his New York Dolls rockin Coney Island during the Siren Fest in 2007. We even caught him playing songs from the Anthology of American Folk Music Collection with his band the Harry Smiths. However, Buster Poindexter at the Cafe Carlyle is David Johansen at his New York finest.

Buster croons through classic tunes with such wit and authoritative conviction that you swear even for a fleeting moment that he is taking you back into the Coney Island of your mind.

He has one hell of a band by the way.

Here is a clip from his critically acclaimed show last October at the Carlyle.

Of course it helps when you have on drums our dear friend holding the set up, the man of one million expressions, Mr. Ray Grappone of Bay Ridge.

Buster Poindexter is performing his lightening hot new set now until February 21 at the Cafe Carlyle, 35 E 76th St. NYC
