Big Changes Proposed for Surf and Stillwell

As part of the mayor’s Vision Zero program for 2015 the DOT has released plans to the public that would dramatically alter the corner of Surf and Stillwell ave.

As part of it’s Intersection Safety Improvements program, three separate corners on Surf and Stillwell will have significant curb extensions in hope of improving pedestrian visibility as well as increasing pedestrian space. There will be a 7 second Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) to give pedestrians a head start. As you can see the corners will look very similar to Dreamland Plaza located on W.12th St. near the boardwalk.

Across the street along side the subway terminal a 5 spot drop off zone for cars and cabs is also being proposed.

The B36 bus stop will be moved a few feet closer to the south east corner of Stillwell, along with a more direct crosswalk that will deter the often dangerous mid block crossings from the subway station. This will create better alignment with the crosswalk.

Stillwell ave. parking will also be modified with curbside parking spaces as opposed to the current midway parking that leads to the boardwalk. According to the DOT this will add 5 more parking spaces on Stilwell ave.

  1. Very nice. More pedestrian friendly like Times Square is. When does this all take effect? Thanks
