Breaking News: Bid Considered to Keep Wood on Coney Island Boardwalk

@Coucilman Treyger

There is still hope that our beloved Riegelmann Boardwalk will still exist as a wooden “boardwalk.”

According to the Daily News:

“The Landmarks Preservation Commission says it may review a bid to keep wood on the Coney Island Boardwalk.”

Local city councilman Mark Treyger has been trying to prove to the commission that the 2.51 mile Riegelmann Boardwalk; which opened in 1923, should be designated an historic landmark preserving it’s original wooden structure.

According to a commission spokesperson:  “If significant new information is submitted, the commission will review it.”

Let’s hope!

    Rockaway (Queens!), NY. Belmar, NJ. Seaside Hts., NJ. Manasquan, NJ. Asbury Park, NJ. Atlantic City, Ocean City and Wildwood, NJ. Ocean City, MD. Santa Monica & Venice, CA. How is it that the tides and inclement weather do not force all of these (justly) famous WOODEN boardwalks to be closed or converted to concrete/plastic? WHY must Coney Island suffer in comparison? The so-called urban planners who came up with this idiotic idea apparently have no idea how much more pleasant a stroll on real wooden planks is… Outrageous!

  3. Keep the wooden planks on qa boardwalk that has been falling apart for years! Nobody cares that there are loose and broken planks everywhere!

    Fixing and maintaining the boardwalk with wood imitation wood and cement??? No way! Fixing is secondary!!!! LOL

  4. It’s amazing how groupthink permeates the internet. Thank goodness in the real world there are still people in this city who actually think for themselves………

  5. Will enjoy th e coney island sideshow of people tripping, falling, and plopping all over the boardwalk. Will enjoy the sideshow of watching the city workers fix the wooden Boardwalk at the rate of one plank an hour.

    Pour the concert and the city’s health and finances will greatly improve.
