Treyger Responds to Home Invading Attack on Senior

The following is a statement from Council Member Mark Treyger (47th District) regarding Sunday’s home invasion attack in Coney Island, where an 81-year-old resident was allegedly beaten and threatened with a knife in her own home by an individual posing as a Con Edison worker.

“No one should have to fear for their safety in their own home. This shocking and disgusting attack on an 81-year-old woman in her own apartment requires a measure of swift, strong justice. I am urging the District Attorney’s office to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law in this case. We as a community must ensure that our senior population receives the protection they need and deserve. We must make crystal clear the fact that abominable acts like this, targeting those who are among the most vulnerable in our communities, will not be tolerated. I also ask that the District Attorney’s office makes sure that the victim, who only speaks Russian, is provided with full translation services, because everyone deserves justice, whether they speak English or not. I also urge law enforcement officials to create and distribute fliers in multiple languages to warn residents in the area to act cautiously when allowing strangers into their homes in light of this detestable crime. My thanks go out to the NYPD for acting quickly to apprehend the suspect.”
